I was sitting at a hotel room desk when the email came in.
Saturday. 3:44 PM.
Two sentences.
“I believe the time has come for me to step away from my duties here at 360clean. Please advise me on the next step. Thanks.”
That was it. Seven years. Our first Area Developer. The person who helped us prove the model worked, landed a large contract with a property management division of a local hospital and attracted other developers to other markets.
Gone in 44 words on a Saturday afternoon.
And just like that, 16 franchisees in that market were without the person they depended on for new contracts, training and support.
We had two choices. Panic or Pivot.
We pivoted!
What followed was hard. A lot of support to the franchisees. A lot of supplemental and new training. A lot of difficult conversations with franchisees who were concerned.
But here’s what happened on the other side of that hard road:
Those franchisees became more self-sufficient. More capable. More resilient. Today that market does as much in sales with one-third the number of franchisees.
The disruption forced a strength nobody would have chosen voluntarily.
That’s the thing about pivots. You rarely see what they’re building until you’re through them.
