There’s a term in franchising that (SHOULD) consume you in the early years as a franchisor.
Royalty Self-Sufficient!
It means the point at which recurring royalty payments from your franchisees are large enough to fully cover your overhead and operating expenses as a franchisor.
Until you get there…you’re grinding! For 360clean, it took us 6 years from the time we began expanding via franchising.
Every new franchisee matters. Every service contract they secure matters. Every royalty payment matters. Not because you’re greedy but because the business doesn’t survive without it.
That season is necessary. I lived it. And I don’t regret a single day of the grind because it built the foundation everything else stands on today.
But here’s what that season can quietly do to you if you’re not careful…
It can make revenue the lens through which you see everything. Every decision filtered through survival. Every relationship measured by its contribution to the number. And for some, you sell franchises to individuals that shouldn’t be part of your system.
I was so focused on getting to royalty self-sufficiency that I hadn’t stopped to ask what I was going to do once I got there.
The grind has a purpose. But the grind is not the purpose.
It took me longer than I’d like to admit to understand the difference.
